The new Civic Engagement for Reconciliation Programme, called ENGAGE, hosted its first event at the Fulbright Centre at 6.00pm on Tuesday, 7 July, 2009 bringing together civil society groups, political leaders from the two communities and influential individuals from Cyprus, Turkey and Greece. The aim was to discuss how civil society in Cyprus could play a more active role in the peace process and support the leaders in the on-going negotiations. The event began with the opening remarks from Mr. Zerihun, Special Representative of the Secreatary General, Mr. Iacovou and Mr. Nami.

The Management Centre (MC) and NGO Support Centre (NGO SC), non-governmental organizations who are committed to supporting the development of a strong, vibrant civil society in Cyprus, are collaborating on this new project. The aim is to encourage civil society groups to play a more active role in the Cyprus peace process.

The ENGAGE programme aims to build on the success of the Cypriot Civil Society Strengthening Progamme which focused on developing the capacity of civil society groups, also implemented by MC and NGO SC and funded by UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust. The new program seeks to enhance the role of civil society in the reconciliation process through a comprehensive programme involving capacity building, technical assistance, open trainings, and public awareness campaigns. The ENGAGE project will also undertake a Civil Society Index Study to establish the state of Cypriot civil society, utilizing a unique research methodology developed by the international NGO Civicus.

The 27-month programme will target existing and potential civil society networks (civil society groups collaborating under a common cause). In order to support the inclusion of these networks in decision-making, trainings will focus on conflict-resolution, lobbying, and networking. Cypriot CSO’s will also have the opportunity to apply for financial assistance to support initiatives contrıbuting to the reconciliation process through a Small Funds Scheme. A public awareness campaign will include bi-communal networking events and award ceremonies for selected CSO initiatives.

ENGAGE is funded by the United Nations Development Programme-Action for Cooperation and Trust (UNDP-ACT).
